Judy and Duke
In the 1970’s Belleville girl, Judy Geluck, met an aspiring musician playing at a bar in Washington Park. He would go on to write country songs including become Waylon Jennings’ bass player. She tells the story of the 70’s and 80’s Nashville scene, being Duke Goff’s girlfriend, running with the likes of Waylon Jennings, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and others.

Duke became a construction painter in the late 70s early 80s. We hung out a bit him self Bobby Jack Buddy Harpstite. Duke was hell of a guitar player. He n Bobby Jack pulled out the guitars n jammed a lot. Would like to talk to Duke sometime.

I heard some stories of him and Waylon and heard Duke play a lot of music he and Bobby Jack in the bars and just sitting around.

This is so wild to hear. Duke was my great uncle. My Grandfather Jim Goff was also a song writer having had written tunes for The Allman bros. This has confirmed many stories I grew up hearing. I cant wait to play this podcast for my father.
Thanks so much for sharing your story, Judy, one of my favorite Waylon tunes has a prominent bass by Duke, “Them Old Love Songs”. Of course Duke made “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?” happen with his driving bass part…amongst other hits…Duke appears first on Waylon’s album(s) “This Time” 1974, Then ” Dreaming My Dreams” (Cowboy Jack Clement) 1975, “Are You Ready For The Country” and other albums a little later during the height of Waylon’s fame… (later rehashed tracks?) , seem to hear his bass style on “I’ve Always Been Crazy” (uncredited?) and credited on “Music Man” album (1980) “Clyde” perhaps? There’s definitely some older tracks on “What Comes Around” (1979), too.
I was privileged to provide medical care to Duke towards the end of his life. We all thought that.he.was “talking through his.hat” when he told us that he had played bass.for Waylon Jennings. Imagine how humbled we were when we foun.out that it was true!

I worked with Duke back in 84 at a club in Springfield,Mo. It was My senior year of high school My sister and I had entered a talent contest there I played drums and sang and she played the fiddle, the next week they called and wanted to hire Us because their drummer was going back to Illinois, we worked with Him for almost a year and then He left and went back to Illinois he had Us and our Dad get some stuff that they had left in the garage which contained some studio reel to reels I had No clue at the time what or who was on them, he had sent me a pawn ticket and asked if I could go to the pawn shop where he had pawned his guitar and see if the guy would let me have the strap because it was a leather one with his name on the front and Waylon and Moody and all of the band had signed the back, when I asked the shop owner if I could just pay him for the strap he sold it to me for $7 I didn’t tell him who’s autographs were on back LoL and then My Mom and Dad took us to Illinois to give it back to him,I was happy to help him get it back:)
I met Duke in the 80s when he became a construction painter his buddy Bobby Jackson got him a apprentice in the local 215.
Duke and Bobby would play music whenever there was a chance. Duke talked about playing Base for Waylon till they got run out of Nashville. Then he had to find a job fortunately he became a painter. Had some great times with them.
Fast forward to September 2026 im at a 70th birthday party sitting talking to a older gentleman he was talking about he wrote some songs. I ask him what kind of music.He said he used to play country music with Duke and Bobby Jack. Can’t recall the name of the band his name Jerry but they call him Casino very nice gentleman. I didnt know Duke had passed away and casino said his brother Danny had just passed away last week.
Duke and Bobby were two great guy.
