Judy and Duke
In the 1970’s Belleville girl, Judy Geluck, met an aspiring musician playing at a bar in Washington Park. He would go on to write country songs including become Waylon Jennings’ bass player. She tells the story of the 70’s and 80’s Nashville scene, being Duke Goff’s girlfriend, running with the likes of Waylon Jennings, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and others.

Duke became a construction painter in the late 70s early 80s. We hung out a bit him self Bobby Jack Buddy Harpstite. Duke was hell of a guitar player. He n Bobby Jack pulled out the guitars n jammed a lot. Would like to talk to Duke sometime.

I heard some stories of him and Waylon and heard Duke play a lot of music he and Bobby Jack in the bars and just sitting around.

This is so wild to hear. Duke was my great uncle. My Grandfather Jim Goff was also a song writer having had written tunes for The Allman bros. This has confirmed many stories I grew up hearing. I cant wait to play this podcast for my father.
Thanks so much for sharing your story, Judy, one of my favorite Waylon tunes has a prominent bass by Duke, “Them Old Love Songs”. Of course Duke made “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?” happen with his driving bass part…amongst other hits…Duke appears first on Waylon’s album(s) “This Time” 1974, Then ” Dreaming My Dreams” (Cowboy Jack Clement) 1975, “Are You Ready For The Country” and other albums a little later during the height of Waylon’s fame… (later rehashed tracks?) , seem to hear his bass style on “I’ve Always Been Crazy” (uncredited?) and credited on “Music Man” album (1980) “Clyde” perhaps? There’s definitely some older tracks on “What Comes Around” (1979), too.
I was privileged to provide medical care to Duke towards the end of his life. We all thought that.he.was “talking through his.hat” when he told us that he had played bass.for Waylon Jennings. Imagine how humbled we were when we foun.out that it was true!
